Just something that's been on my mind for a while and seen brought up a few times.

Depends on the genre. In RPGs story is very important, while in strategy games it's not as important. First-Person Shooters also need some sort of compelling story to go along with the action, though it's the main focus.

In terms of importance:

Action/FPS - 70-80%
Adventure - 90-95%
RPG - 90-100%
Strategy - 45-50%
Simulation - 30-50%
Casual - 10-20%
Sports/Racing - 20-30%

I'll put it around there in terms of genre, but it also depends on the person. One person might find story more important than another person. It varies a lot.

For me, it obviously depends on genre. I never care too much about story in, say, Command and Conquer games, but in the action adventure a good story can elevate a game into a real artistick experience.

I can only echo what's been said already, depends on the genre of game. However, if you're asking how important story is to me in general when I'm choosing which games to play, it's not particularly important. I'm not much of a gamer really, I tend to stick to the same games (FIFA, NBA 2K & Pokemon) when I do play, and story isn't that important where those games are concerned.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

To me it's of average importance overall, I'm more interested in the aesthetics of it all.

Even if the story has been done before if it's presented in a unique/interesting way or setting that can enhance it then I'm all for that, it's hard to have a story vastly unique these days that isn't just a mess so the game overall being "different" suits me.

On that note honestly haven't enjoyed the story of a game for a while now. Excluding games I've yet to play properly like Witcher 3.

TLOU is probably the last game I could truly sink in to the story of. Most other games seem to have heavy focus on gameplay these days.

To put it in DBZ Terms?

Entertainment = Gameplay > Story > Acting & Sound Track > Graphics

Story and dialogue are what will make a game really memorable and endearing to me. Gameplay is important for fighting games and beat em ups (I mostly only play those genres and jrpgs, with the occasional sports game) but even for games without a heavy plot it's the story of how I struggle to beat it or beat my friends that make a game memorable.

Your game can have a world-changing story but if it plays like crap then the game sucks.

I agree with what most have posted here. It heavily depends on the genre. For example, in a multiplayer focused game there usually is not a story and even if there was a story it's a short generic story. I think Story plays a more important role in games which has more focus on single player.

Follow up: Would you rather have a game with an amazing story but terrible gameplay or a game with a terrible and/or nonexistence story but with great gameplay?

Oh, second option 100%. If you only want a good story go read a book or something.

This sums it up. A good story is a book, or a movie, or a TV show. A game with bad gameplay isn't really a game.

Story is something that can really help to enhance a game's quality, while it can't save a bad game from being bad it does greatly help games with average or good gameplay, and if you're doing it right, the gameplay and the story should almost be one in the same rather than two separate entities you can compare like that.

i think im the opposite when it comes to those two choices. id rather have an amazing story and bad gameplay than a s*** story but great gameplay. i would at least keep playing until the story's been concluded, whereas a game with a s*** story but great gameplay i would just put down after messing around on it for an hour or two lol. like for me there's no point unless i've got some sort of direction and feel that the time im spending on it is leading somewhere instead of mindlessly doing s*** for the sake of good gameplay.

What would you consider bad gameplay? Something along the lines of what Telltale Games are doing? Basically a point and click adventure game with minimal puzzles? If that's the case, I prefer story.
